What is Meshet

🏠 A network of homes

Every computer or phone running Meshet is a node: it stores its own share, relays everyone else's and connects directly with its neighbors. There is no server that can be shut down, sold or spied on.

🔐 Key-based identity

When you install it, an Ed25519 key is created and becomes your identity. All messages travel encrypted (TLS 1.3 / libp2p Noise) and domains are signed with your key: nobody can impersonate you.

🌱 It grows by itself

Two homes on the same Wi-Fi find each other automatically (mDNS). To link neighborhoods or cities, a Kademlia DHT, seed nodes and relays that traverse routers and CG-NAT are used.

Optional: set a username and password in Ajustes (Settings) to protect the panel, the AI, your sites under construction and your mail. Mesh websites remain viewable without a password.

Meshmail

New: list or chat view with ticks (✓ waiting, ✓✓ delivered, blue ✓✓ read — signed receipts). No servers: both computers must be online at the same time; if the recipient is off, the message waits in your Outbox and is delivered automatically on reconnect. Attachments (images, videos, documents) are scanned on the recipient's computer before reaching the inbox (real file type, executables/scripts/macros blocked, ClamAV and your AI); suspicious mail goes to Quarantine and the sender sees a ⛔ alert. This greatly reduces risk but nothing is 100 % guaranteed. P2P mail between homes: you@shop.myweb on your domains, end-to-end encrypted, Bootstrap HTML or plain text.

When you open Meshet you see your dashboard: connected peers, chat, files, domains, websites, AI and settings. All in your browser, all in your home.

Joining the network, in 3 steps

  1. Download the package for your system below (Windows, macOS, Linux or Android). Check the SHA-256 hash if you want to be extra safe.
  2. Install and open Meshet. Your portal will open at http://127.0.0.1:7777. Choose a display name ("House of…") and, if you like, a password for the portal.
  3. Connect with someone. If you are on the same Wi-Fi, you will see each other within seconds. If you are far apart, copy one of the "Addresses of this node" (in Home → Your identity) and paste it into Peers → Connect manually on your friend's Meshet (or start with -seeds).
Minimum to work: 2 machines. No Internet or server needed: two computers on the same router already form a complete Meshet network (chat, files, domains, websites and AI). Every new home that joins expands the network and makes it more resilient.

Connecting distant homes

Are you in another city or country? Add this seed in Settings → Seeds (or when starting Meshet) and your home will join the network even if nobody on your Wi-Fi has it yet. The seed is the meeting point: from there your node discovers the rest of the network through the DHT.

  1. Copy the seed with the button above. It is a standard libp2p multiaddr pointing at the seed node's domain.
  2. Paste it in Settings → Seeds on your portal (http://127.0.0.1:7777). You can also start directly with meshet -semillas /dns4/nodo.meshet.com/tcp/4001/p2p/12D3KooWSwK5o69jwiCC45cQSh2fjyjgPRMx9CFEHTJfWXFAF2sY.
  3. You're in. Your node connects to the seed, joins the DHT and discovers the other homes, even those behind routers or CG-NAT (via relays and hole punching).
Same Wi-Fi: no seed needed. Homes on the same network find each other within seconds (mDNS). The seed is only needed to link homes that are far apart.

Browser proxy compatibility

See mesh websites in your browser. You do not need a special browser: with Meshet running, Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave or Safari open other homes' websites (.meshet, .miweb…). There are three ways; pick the one you like.

Run it and you are done: it sets Meshet's automatic proxy in your system and in Firefox (and makes Meshet start when you log in). Then just type http://gonzalo.miweb. Nothing to do by hand. To undo it, run it again.

Windows: double-click (if SmartScreen warns: "More info → Run anyway"). macOS: unzip and open Meshet-Navegadores-macOS.command with right-click → Open. Linux: sh Meshet-Navegadores-Linux.sh. Meshet's installers already do this for you; there is also the Ajustes → Configurar navegadores button in the portal and the command meshet proxy instalar (undo: meshet proxy quitar).

  1. Open Meshet on your computer. The local portal should be at http://127.0.0.1:7777.
  2. Option A · short URL by hand (http://gonzalo.miweb or any mesh domain): set the automatic proxy to http://127.0.0.1:7777/proxy.pac. In Chrome / Edge: Settings → System → Open your computer's proxy settings → Automatic proxy / "Use setup script" → paste that address. In Firefox: Settings → Network Settings → Automatic proxy configuration URL. Save and type http://gonzalo.miweb (with http:// in front).
  3. Option B · nothing to configure: always use http://NAME.localhost:7777. For example http://gonzalo.miweb.localhost:7777.

What does the PAC do? It only routes mesh domains (.meshet, .miweb, etc.) to the Meshet node on your PC. The rest of the Internet is unchanged. If the machine serving a website is off you will see the page "Machine not connected. Please try again later."

Step-by-step guide

1 · Install on Windows

Run Meshet-Setup-0.1.0-windows-x64.exe. It creates shortcuts in the Start menu and on the desktop. The first time, the Windows firewall will ask: check Private networks so your neighbors can find you. With the .zip, unzip and double-click Iniciar Meshet.bat (or instalar.bat to install it for your user).

2 · Install on macOS

Unzip the .tar.gz, open Terminal in the folder and run ./instalar.sh (add --servicio so it starts on login). Since the app is not notarized, the script removes the quarantine flag. If you prefer, drag Meshet.app into Applications and open it with right-click → Open.

3 · Install on Linux

With the .deb: sudo apt install ./meshet_0.1.0_amd64.deb and look for "Meshet" in the menu. With the .tar.gz: tar xzf Meshet-0.1.0-linux-amd64.tar.gz && cd meshet* && ./instalar.sh --servicio (the systemd user service keeps it always running).

4 · Install on Android

Download the .apk on your phone, open it and accept installing from this source. When you open Meshet, the node starts (you will see a permanent "Meshet active" notification) and so does the portal. If you would rather save battery, long-press the screen and choose Connect to home node…: the phone will use your computer's node (start it with meshet -remoto, set a password in Settings and enter http://your-PC-IP:7777).

5 · Connect two homes

Same network: do nothing; the other home will appear in Peers within seconds. Far apart: at house A, in Home → Your identity, copy an address like /ip4/PUBLIC-IP/tcp/4001/p2p/… (open port 4001 on the router or let UPnP do it) and paste it at house B in Peers → Connect manually. If one home has a public IP, start it with meshet -semilla and the rest with meshet -semillas ADDRESS: it will act as a meeting point and relay for those behind CG-NAT.

6 · Chat and share files

In Chat pick a neighbor or the "Public square". Create a group and share the meshet-grupo:… invitation only with people you trust. In Files upload a file and mark it as shared: your neighbors will see it in your catalog and can download it.

7 · Register your .meshet domain

In Domains type a name (3–63 letters, numbers or hyphens) and press Check: the assistant will tell you whether it is available and whether it looks too similar to another. When registering, your node signs the record with your key and performs a small proof of work to prevent hoarding. It lasts a year; renew it from the same screen (30-day grace period).

8 · Publish your website

In Websites point to the folder with your index.html (or upload a .zip) and the .meshet name. You can also publish an app you have running at http://127.0.0.1:PORT. Anyone will see it at http://your-name.meshet.localhost:7777/. To type http://your-name.meshet directly, use the one-click browser configurator (or the automatic proxy http://127.0.0.1:7777/proxy.pac).

9 · Set up AI

In Token link your meshet.com/token account (with a code or by pasting your Meshet key) and in AI pick Waca 3.5: a single chat that answers your questions and also builds (domains, websites, Meshmail mailboxes). Other AIs (OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, Ollama…) are listed under "Other AIs" and unlock with the All AIs plan (EUR 49/month); their settings stay encrypted on your machine. AI is private to your node: it is for building and understanding your system and only answers on your computer (never the network, the LAN or the websites you visit). Any OpenAI-compatible program on your machine can use http://127.0.0.1:7777/v1 with your token as the key.

10 · Protect the panel with a password

In Ajustes → Acceso al panel (Settings → Panel access) choose a username and password (at least 8 characters). From then on the panel, AI, Editor and Meshmail ask for the password and a Log out ("Salir") button appears at the top. Changing or removing it requires the current password. It is stored hashed (Argon2id). Forgot it? On your computer run meshet acceso quitar and restart Meshet.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Internet?

Not to get started. Two or more machines on the same router form a complete network. Internet is only needed to link homes that are far apart.

How much does it cost?

For individuals, nothing: Meshet is free for personal, non-commercial use, and so are domains. Companies and self-employed need a one-time license: €20 (includes the first employee) + €1 for each additional employee; e.g. 10 employees = €29 (see license). AI is optional: "Waca 3.5 AI" runs on tokens (no monthly fee; now -30% presale) and the All AIs plan (EUR 49/month) unlocks the other providers.

Who can read my messages?

Only the recipient. Connections between nodes are end-to-end encrypted and groups use an AES-256 key held only by those who received the invitation. The Public square, as its name suggests, can be read by the whole network.

What if I turn my computer off?

Your pending messages will be delivered when you come back, your domains keep resolving (other nodes store them) and your websites stay visible if any neighbor replicated them.

What if someone registers a name similar to mine?

The system rejects reserved names and warns about look-alikes (one-letter changes, "1" instead of "l", etc.). For any given name, whoever registered it first keeps it as long as they renew it.

Does it work behind a router or with CG-NAT fiber?

Yes. Meshet uses UPnP, AutoNAT, hole punching (DCUtR) and circuit-v2 relays through the seed nodes. We have tested it with a node behind NAT in the simulation.

Does it drain the phone battery?

The full node uses some battery and data because it helps the network. If you are worried, use light mode, which only connects to your home node.

Is it legal to publish anything?

Meshet does not change the law: each person is responsible for what they publish and share. Use the network with respect, as you would in your community.

Why does the installer say "unknown publisher"?

This first version is not signed with commercial Microsoft or Apple certificates. Verify the SHA-256 hash published in SHA256SUMS.txt.
